MACHINGA COMMEMORATES 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM

Yesterday, Youth Impact Organization joined the district commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism at Nsanama Primary School Ground in Machinga, held under the theme “Unite to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls in Malawi.” We showcased how the ongoing TEENs Project aligns with this year’s theme by promoting digital safety, improving reporting systems, empowering girls with digital skills, offering digital psychosocial support to survivors, and distributing tablets to strengthen safe digital access. The TEENs Project is supported by the Embassy of Ireland through UNFPA, in partnership with the Malawi Girl Guides Association (MAGGA).
The guest of honor, Second Deputy Speaker Esther Jolobala encouraged survivors of cyberbullying to remain courageous, build their confidence, and not let online harassment derail their goals. She shared her own experience of facing online bullying during a campaign, which pushed her to stay focused and later secure a third term as MP for Machinga East. She also highlighted the need for stronger enforcement of cyberbullying laws to protect vulnerable groups in the digital space.
The Principal Gender Officer for Machinga, Lawrence Matiti, emphasized ongoing interventions aimed at reducing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence as digital platform use continues to grow. Belinda Somanje Chimombo, Chairperson of the Machinga CSO who is also our Executive Director urged communities to report all forms of abuse and ensure perpetrators face legal consequences. Youth Impact Organization also joined the solidarity walk to amplify the district’s call to end digital violence. Together, we stand to Unite to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls in Malawi.
