TIKONDANE GIRLS TURN SAVINGS INTO OPPORTUNITY

9/28/2026

In T/A Mizinga, members of Tikondane Safe Space, a group of girls aged 15–19, are showing how collective saving can create real economic opportunities for young girls. After a year of running their Village Savings and Loans (VSL) group, the girls recently shared out their savings, distributing over MWK 900,000 among members

The group did more than save and provide loans to its members. They invested part of their savings in a chitenje fabric business, using the profits to grow their capital. This approach enabled the girls to increase the value of their savings while gaining practical experience in entrepreneurship, financial management and collective decision-making.

For the girls of Tikondane Safe Space, the achievement is more than a share-out. It is evidence of what they can build when given the opportunity, knowledge and space to manage resources together. Their experience demonstrates the potential for adolescent girls to develop sustainable economic activities and strengthen their financial resilience within their communities.
